EV Charger Installation
A Charger That Fits Your Garage and Your Panel
Plugging an electric car into a regular wall outlet works in a pinch. Do it every night for a few weeks, though, and you start to feel how slow it is. Most Windsor drivers who call us have reached that point. They bought the car, they like the car, and now they want a proper charger in the garage so the car is ready when they are.

PH Electric is a locally owned, family-operated electrical contractor, and we’ve been working in Northern Colorado since 2021. EV charger installs are a regular part of our week. The wiring is only half the job. The other half is making sure your home’s electrical system can carry a new, heavy load that runs for hours at a time.
Why Level 2 Is the Upgrade Most People Want
Level 1 charging uses a standard 120-volt outlet. It’s fine for a plug-in hybrid or a driver who covers very few miles. For a full battery electric vehicle, it can leave you short on mornings when you need more range than the car picked up overnight.
A Level 2 charger runs on a 240-volt circuit, the same kind of power your dryer or range uses. That usually means a full charge overnight, with room to spare. You also stop planning your week around public charging stops, which is its own kind of relief.
Many Level 2 units also connect to Wi-Fi, so you can schedule charging for off-peak hours or check a session from your phone. Whether that’s worth having depends on you, and we’ll tell you honestly if a simpler unit does the job.
The Part Nobody Mentions: Your Panel
Here’s what I wish more homeowners knew before they buy a charger. The charger is the easy part. What matters is whether your panel has the capacity to feed it.
An EV charger is a continuous load. It might pull power for several hours straight, which is very different from a toaster running for two minutes. If your panel is already crowded, or the service into your home is small, adding a charger can push the whole system past what it should carry.
So before we quote anything, we look at the panel. We check available capacity, count open breaker spaces, and run a load calculation to see what your home can actually support. Sometimes the answer is a simple dedicated circuit, and you’re done in a few hours. Other times a panel upgrade makes sense, and if that’s the case, we’ll show you why, in plain terms, before you decide anything. If you want to read more about that side of things, our panel upgrade page covers it.
How an Install Works With Us
Every garage is different, but the process looks about the same.
We start with a conversation and a site visit. We look at where you park, where you’d like the charger mounted, and how far that spot is from your panel. Distance matters more than people expect, because a long run through finished walls or around a corner changes the labor and the materials.
Next, we confirm which charger you plan to use, or help you choose one if you haven’t yet. Different models have different requirements, and the circuit has to match the equipment. Bigger isn’t automatically better here. The breaker, the wire size, and the protection all need to line up with the charger and with your home’s capacity.
Then we handle permits and inspections. We pull the permit, do the installation to current NEC standards, and schedule the inspection. After that, we test the charger, set up any app or Wi-Fi features, and walk you through how to use it. We want you to feel comfortable at your own charging station, not guessing which light means what.
What to Think About Before You Call
You don’t need to have everything figured out. A few details help us give you a better estimate right away:
- The make and model of your vehicle
- The charger you’re considering, if you have one in mind
- Whether you’d like it inside the garage, on an exterior wall, or in a carport
- Roughly where your electrical panel sits compared to where the charger would go
If you’re missing any of that, no problem. We’ll sort it out together during the visit.
On incentives, I’ll be straightforward. Federal, state, and utility programs for home charging have shifted quite a bit lately, and I’d rather not quote you something that expired last month. Check with your utility about current rebates, and we’re happy to tell you what we know when we meet.
